Tinkering & Creating with AI:
With the public arrival of generative AI (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini) education was presented with a unique scenario to quickly navigate an uncertain landscape and the impact on teaching and learning. During this time of rapid change, a mindset of exploration, tinkering and experimentation is helpful to deeply learn about the potential of AI in education.
This full day, hands-on workshop is designed for educators that have already started their exploration into text generative AI and want to move further, beyond the use case of chatbots for prompt writing and task completion. Through the lens of creation and creativity, the workshop will explore the following concepts and ideas:
Developing AI Literacy
Through hands-on challenges and tinkering, workshop participants will strengthen their foundational understanding of AI by truly examining, evaluating, and understanding AI output. Turn-key AI literacy activities and experiences will be provided that can be used in any school or classroom setting.
Creating Custom Chatbots for Education
Educators are now empowered to create their own custom chatbot environments that are designed specifically for the needs of their learners and based on the challenges that generative AI might be able to solve in their classrooms. Workshop participants will build, experiment and prepare a custom chatbot that can be shared with learners and used in their school or classroom!
Navigating the Future & Rapid Change
Unlike previously adopted classroom technologies, the rapidly changing arrival technology of generative AI creates both opportunities and challenges for educators. In the final phase of the workshop, participants will learn and explore the shift from text and keyboard based interactions with AI, to AI that is based on video, audio and screensharing of a device. Exploring and preparing for this shift in AI will allow workshop participants to broaden their understanding and will help prepare for the next phase of this technology's evolution.
Crafting Policy & Guidelines
Schools are classrooms are looking for thoughtful guidance on how to develop guidelines and policy around AI use for both educators and students. We will explore approaches, examples, and a helpful philosophy behind developing these guidelines.
The goals and outcomes of this full day, hands-on workshop include:
Enhanced Understanding
Increased Comfort and Ability
Shift in Thinking
Improved Awareness & Capacity to Navigate Change
NOTE:
Coffee & Lunch is provided for workshop attendees
